What is the Prometric exam?
Prometric is a global test-delivery company that administers computer-based licensing exams on behalf of GCC health authorities. When people say the "Prometric exam," they mean the licensing assessment of a specific authority, for example the DHA exam for Dubai, the SCFHS exam for Saudi Arabia, or the QCHP exam for Qatar, delivered at a Prometric test centre or via remote proctoring.

Exam format and pass scores
Most GCC Prometric exams are multiple-choice (MCQ), between 70 and 150 questions, with 2 to 3 hours on the clock. The typical pass mark is 60%, though it varies by authority and profession. Questions are scenario-based: you will be given a short clinical vignette and asked for the best next step, most likely diagnosis, or safest intervention.
How hard is it?
First-attempt failure rates are high for candidates who rely on general knowledge alone. The exams test local protocol-aligned clinical decisions, and time pressure is real, roughly 90 seconds per question. Structured MCQ practice is the difference between passing and paying for a re-sit.

What the Prometric exam is not
Four assumptions cost candidates money every year, and all four come from misunderstanding what this exam actually is.
It is not a visa or a job. Passing gives you an assessment result. Your licence is issued only when a licensed facility sponsors and activates it, and your visa follows from the employment, not from the exam.
It is not one exam that works everywhere. Prometric is the delivery company, not the qualification. A DHA pass is a DHA pass. If you later want to work in Abu Dhabi or Saudi Arabia, you are dealing with a different authority, a different blueprint and in most cases another paper.
It is not a substitute for your home registration. Your council registration at home must be current, because it is what produces the good standing certificate your file needs.
It is not the first step. This is the one that catches people out. You cannot book the exam until your authority has verified your documents and issued an eligibility ID, and that verification is the part that takes weeks.

Read that order carefully. Most candidates start preparing for the exam on day one and start collecting documents late, which is exactly the wrong way round. The document work sits on the critical path. The exam does not, because you control when you are ready for it. What exam day looks like
You sit at a computer in a test centre with your passport, and the ID you present has to match the name on your application exactly. Differences between a passport name and a degree name are worth resolving long before the exam, not on the morning.
The paper is multiple choice with no negative marking, so an unanswered question and a wrong answer score the same. There is never a reason to leave one blank. Personal items go in a locker, and you are given on-screen tools rather than paper notes.
Your result appears on screen when you finish. There is no waiting period for the score itself, though the authority still has to process it into your file afterwards.
What happens if you do not pass
Retake rules are set by each authority rather than by Prometric, and they usually involve a waiting period before you can sit again, along with a further fee. The financial cost is rarely the real problem.
The real cost is time, in two forms. Your eligibility window is finite, so a long gap between attempts can mean revalidating parts of the file. And if an employer is waiting on you, a retake pushes a start date that somebody else has planned around. Frequently asked questions
Can I take the Prometric exam in my home country?
Yes. Once your authority issues the eligibility ID you can book at any Prometric centre, including centres in India, Pakistan, the Philippines and across Europe, or in the Gulf itself. You do not need to travel before you are licensed and for most authorities you do not need a job offer to begin.
Do I need a job offer before I sit the exam?
For most authorities, no. You can open your own file, clear Dataflow and sit the paper without an employer, who is then needed only at the activation step. Is the Prometric exam the same as NCLEX?

How long should I prepare?
That depends on how long ago you qualified and how far your daily practice sits from the blueprint. What is predictable is that the blueprint decides the questions, so preparation should follow the published coverage areas for your title rather than general revision.
