From Home Country to Working Doctor in Dubai: The Complete 2026 Roadmap
Every step from deciding on Dubai to your first shift — documents, Dataflow, the DHA exam, job hunting and visa — in one chronological roadmap with realistic timelines.
This is the full chronological path from "I want to work in Dubai" to your first clinical shift — with realistic durations at every step. Total journey for a well-prepared candidate: 4–6 months.
Phase 1 — Foundations (Weeks 1–4)
- Confirm eligibility. Recognised degree, 2+ years post-internship experience (GP tier), clean standing. Run the free eligibility check if unsure.
- Start the attestation chain on your degree: home MOFA → UAE Embassy → (later) MOFA UAE. Slowest embassies take 4 weeks — start now, not later.
- Collect experience letters with exact DD/MM/YYYY dates and HR contacts, covering every month since qualification.
Phase 2 — Sheryan + Dataflow (Weeks 3–12, overlaps Phase 1)
- Create your Sheryan file on the DHA portal and upload documents (2–3 days).
- Submit Dataflow — primary source verification of degree, licence, experience and Good Standing. Budget 4–8 weeks; email your university registrar to expect the verification request. Full detail in our Dataflow guide.
- Time your Good Standing so it's fresh at DHA review — order it late in the Dataflow window.
Phase 3 — Exam (Weeks 8–16, prepare in parallel)
- Prepare while Dataflow runs — 1,500+ chapter-wise MCQs, then full-length timed mocks. Don't waste the Dataflow wait.
- Receive your Eligibility ID once DHA reviews the cleared file (3–7 working days).
- Book Prometric — Dubai or your home country — when mocks clear 75%. Pass = instant on-screen result.
Phase 4 — Job + activation (Weeks 14–24)
- Job hunt with licence-in-hand leverage. A passed exam + eligible file makes you a same-month hire. Browse live GCC openings or join the Talent Pool so employers find you.
- Employer activates your licence — the facility submits the practice permit request (3–7 working days).
- Visa, Emirates ID, medical — employer-driven, 2–4 weeks, often parallel with onboarding.
The two mistakes that add months
- Serial instead of parallel: attestation, Dataflow and exam prep should overlap. Candidates who sequence them take 9 months instead of 5.
- Booking the exam unprepared: a fail costs ~3 months of retake wait — longer than proper preparation would have taken.
