Eight areas make up the CPS5071 blueprint. Exactly one of them is called clinical psychology.
The other seven are schools of psychology, biological psychology, developmental psychology, psychology of learning, general psychology, personality and individual differences, and research methodology. Read that list again and the character of this exam becomes obvious. It is a licensing paper that examines your degree rather than your caseload.
Ten years in therapy rooms does not prepare you for this paper
This is the hardest thing to accept about CPS5071 and the reason capable clinicians fail it. A psychologist who has run cognitive behavioural work for a decade is excellent at the one area named clinical psychology and has not opened a textbook on the other seven since university.
Then the paper asks about operant schedules, about the structural differences between psychoanalytic and humanistic schools, about a stage of cognitive development, about what makes a study design valid. None of it is unreasonable for a licensed psychologist to know. All of it is cold if the last contact was a final year exam.
The practical consequence is simple. Plan your revision around the seven academic areas and treat clinical psychology as the one area you can trust yourself on, which is the reverse of what almost every candidate does.

Eighty three correct answers clears it. Spread across eight areas that is roughly ten per area, so a candidate who is outstanding in one area and blank in three has already lost more than the margin allows.
What the paper actually asks
The foundations. Schools of psychology, general psychology, and personality and individual differences. Theory, the people who built it, and the models used to describe difference. This is recall territory, which makes it reliable revision: the material is finite and the questions do not move.
How people work and change. Biological psychology, developmental psychology, and psychology of learning. Neuroanatomy and neurotransmission on one side, developmental stages on another, conditioning and reinforcement on a third. Psychology of learning is the area candidates most often underestimate, and its questions are among the most answerable on the paper because the principles are precise.
Clinical work. Assessment, formulation, diagnostic frameworks and therapeutic models. One area of eight, and the one where practising candidates score well without extra preparation.
Research methodology. Design, sampling, validity, reliability and the reasoning behind statistical choice. Its presence on a licensing blueprint tells you the regulator expects a psychologist to read evidence critically rather than only apply it. Candidates who have not touched statistics since their dissertation should treat this as a subject, not a revision note.
Where candidates lose marks
- Revising clinical practice. The comfortable area. It is one eighth of the paper.
- Leaving research methodology until last. It is a full area on the blueprint and it takes real study time to rebuild, not an evening of skimming.
- Skipping the schools of psychology. It looks like history. It produces straightforward questions that are pure marks for anyone who spends a few hours on them.
- Assuming your therapeutic model is the answer. The paper is model neutral. A question about a behavioural principle wants the behavioural answer, whatever you practise.
- Untimed practice. Seventy two seconds a question, and psychology stems are wordy. Reading speed is part of the exam.

No. The paper is written across schools rather than within one, so questions on psychodynamic, humanistic and behavioural models all appear and each wants the answer from its own framework.
