Good Standing Certificate: What It Is and How to Get It
The Good Standing Certificate expires faster than any other licensing document, and re-ordering it mid process is the most avoidable delay there is.
The certificate of good standing is a short letter from your licensing council saying three things: that you are registered with it, that your registration is active, and that you carry no disciplinary action. Every GCC authority asks for one.
It is also the document that stalls more files than any other, and almost never because a candidate cannot get it. It stalls because of when it was ordered.
The six month rule, measured from the wrong end
Every Gulf authority wants the certificate to be no older than six months. The trap is what those six months are counted against. They are counted to the date the authority reads it, not the date you started your application.
The failure runs like this. You order the certificate first, in the week you decide to apply, because that feels organised. Then DataFlow takes two months or more. Then the authority evaluates the file, you wait for an eligibility letter, you book an exam slot, you sit it. By the time anyone at the authority opens the certificate, it is seven months old and has to be re-ordered. If your council is slow, that alone adds another month to a file that was otherwise finished.
So the rule is the opposite of what instinct says. Order the certificate late, not early.
Why six months is tighter than it sounds
Look at how long the middle of the process actually runs before anyone reviews your documents.

Saudi Arabia is the clearest case. At the long end of the range the whole route runs close to six months on its own, so a certificate ordered on day one has almost no chance of still being valid when the file is reviewed. Bahrain and Dubai give you the most room, and even there a slow council can eat it.

When to order it
Order it when DataFlow is roughly three weeks from finishing, adjusted for how slow your own council is.

If your council sits in the bottom row, start the request while DataFlow still has six or seven weeks to run. If it is an online portal, you can wait until the verification is nearly done. Either way, the target is the same: the certificate should be as young as possible on the day the authority opens it.
It has to come from the right council
The certificate must come from the council where you are currently licensed, or most recently were. Not the council of the country where you graduated, unless those happen to be the same.
This catches candidates who studied in one country and have practised in another for years. The graduating country issues a degree, not a standing certificate. Standing is about your licence, so it comes from wherever that licence lives now.
If you have held licences in more than one country during the period your experience letters cover, expect to be asked for a certificate from each of them.
The mistakes that cost weeks
- Name and registration number that do not match. If the spelling on the certificate differs from your passport, or the registration number differs from your licence, DataFlow raises a query and the file waits. Check all three documents side by side before you submit anything.
- Assuming one certificate covers several applications. If you are applying to two authorities in parallel, you will usually need two certificates, because each verifies independently and each wants a copy addressed to it.
- Letting it sit in a drawer. A certificate issued and then held for two months while you finish something else has spent a third of its life doing nothing.
- Ordering before you know which authority you are applying to. Some councils address the certificate to a named regulator, which makes it useless elsewhere.
What to do if it expires mid process
Re-order immediately and tell the authority the new one is coming, rather than waiting for them to ask. A file marked as awaiting a document keeps its place. A file that goes quiet can be closed.
If your council is slow, ask whether it can issue an interim confirmation letter or send the certificate directly to the authority by email. Several councils will do both, and neither is usually offered unless you ask.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the same certificate for DataFlow and for the authority
Usually yes, if it is still inside six months when the authority reviews it. DataFlow verifies the certificate with the issuing council. The authority then reads it as part of the final file, and that second reading is the one the six months is measured against.
My council issues the certificate directly to the regulator. Is that a problem
No, it is preferable. A certificate sent council to authority removes any question about authenticity. Keep a copy for your own records and for DataFlow.
I am not currently practising. Can I still get one
Yes, as long as your registration is active. If your registration has lapsed, restore it first. A certificate confirming lapsed registration will not satisfy a Gulf authority, and restoring registration is usually faster than arguing the point.
