Good Standing Certificate: What It Is and How to Get One Fast

The Good Standing Certificate expires faster than any other licensing document and re-ordering it mid-process is the #1 avoidable delay. Here is how to time it right.

The Certificate of Good Standing (COGS) is a letter from your licensing council confirming you're registered, in active standing, and free of disciplinary action. Every GCC authority requires one — and it is the document most likely to expire mid-application and stall your file.

The 6-month trap

GCC authorities want Good Standing issued within 6 months of their review — not within 6 months of when you started Dataflow. The failure pattern looks like this:

  1. You order COGS first, feeling organised (month 0)
  2. Dataflow takes 8–10 weeks (months 1–3)
  3. Authority evaluation, exam booking, exam (months 3–6)
  4. Final licence review — your COGS is now 6+ months old → re-order and wait again

The fix: order Good Standing late — ideally as Dataflow nears completion — so it's fresh at the authority's review stage.

How long councils take to issue it

Council typeTypical issue time
Online-portal councils (UK NMC, HCPC, most US boards)Days – 2 weeks
PMC / PNC (Pakistan), Indian state councils2–6 weeks
Councils requiring in-person application4–8 weeks

If your council is slow, factor that into the timing — order when Dataflow is ~3 weeks from finishing.

Common COGS mistakes

  • Ordering from the wrong council — it must come from where you're currently (or most recently) licensed, not where you graduated.
  • Name/registration number mismatches with your licence — triggers a Dataflow query.
  • Assuming one COGS covers multiple applications — applying to DHA and SCFHS in parallel usually means two certificates, since each verifies independently.

Where COGS fits in each process
