Registered Midwife License in the GCC 2026: MID5104 Exam Guide
MID5104 for registered midwives: the 50 percent pass mark, why midwifery is licensed separately from nursing, what the paper asks beyond the delivery room, and the route to a licence.
In the Gulf, midwifery is licensed as a profession in its own right, not as a nursing specialty. That single fact decides most of what follows. MID5104 is written against a midwifery blueprint, it is marked at 50 percent, and it asks you to make decisions that a nurse working on a maternity ward would refer rather than take.
Which midwifery code is yours
Two codes carry the profession. MID5104 is the registered midwife title, which carries independent responsibility for normal pregnancy and normal labour. MID5101 is the assistant midwife title, a supervised scope with its own paper and a lower pass mark. Regulators assign the title from your qualification and your registration at home, so a nurse who has worked in labour rooms for years is still registered as a nurse unless the midwifery qualification exists on paper. The GCC nursing and midwifery exam guide sets out how each authority splits the two.
The paper in numbers
- Exam code: MID5104
- Questions: 150 multiple choice
- Duration: 3 hours
- Pass score: 50 percent
- Delivery: Prometric or Pearson VUE test centre
Fifty percent is 75 correct answers out of 150, which sounds generous until you see how much of the paper sits outside the delivery room.
What the paper actually asks
The blueprint runs across antenatal and antepartum care, intrapartum care, postpartum care, newborn care, gynaecological care, pharmacology in midwifery, ethics and legal issues, and counselling and education. The weight is on recognising the moment normal stops being normal.
- Antenatal screening, dating, and the findings that change a care plan rather than the ones that are simply recorded
- Partogram reading, slow progress, malposition and the decision to escalate
- Postpartum haemorrhage, the order of first actions, and uterotonic choice
- Hypertensive disease, magnesium sulphate monitoring and the signs of toxicity
- Immediate newborn care, initial resuscitation steps, thermal care and early feeding
- Consent, documentation, confidentiality and scope, which sit under ethics and legal issues and are examined more heavily than candidates expect
Where candidates lose marks
The first trap is answering as a nurse. When a question describes a deviation in labour, the midwife answer is a midwifery action followed by escalation, not escalation alone. The second is drug detail. Pharmacology in midwifery is a named coverage area, and doses, contraindications and monitoring for uterotonics, antihypertensives and magnesium sulphate appear every sitting. The third is counselling items, where the correct answer is the one that keeps the woman deciding, and confident clinical answers that remove her choice are marked wrong.
Which regulator licenses you
The paper travels, the title does not. DHA, DOH and MOHAP license midwives in the UAE, with SCFHS in Saudi Arabia, QCHP in Qatar, NHRA in Bahrain and OMSB in Oman. What differs is scope on paper: suturing, cannulation and independent conduct of delivery are written differently from one authority to the next, and your job offer has to match the scope your licence grants. Pass marks by authority are listed in the pass score guide.
Documents that decide the timeline
Midwifery files fail verification more often than nursing files, for one reason: many candidates hold a nursing registration and a midwifery certificate, and only one of them is verifiable at source. Both need to stand on their own. Experience letters should state that you conducted deliveries rather than assisted, with numbers and dates, because that sentence is what an assessor reads when deciding between the registered and the assistant title. The DataFlow verification guide covers the rest of the file.
Frequently asked questions
Can a registered nurse sit the registered midwife exam?
Not on nursing registration alone. The authority checks the qualification before it releases the exam code, so a nurse without a recognised midwifery qualification is assigned a nursing paper no matter how much maternity experience the file shows.
Is a dual nurse and midwife registration useful in the Gulf?
It is useful for employment and it is sometimes required for it, but licensing treats the titles separately. You are licensed under the title you applied for, and practising outside it is a regulatory problem rather than a paperwork one.
Does the exam cover gynaecology as well as pregnancy?
Yes. Gynaecological care is a coverage area in its own right, and candidates who prepare only obstetrics lose a block of marks they never planned for.
