Assistant Midwife License in the GCC 2026: MID5101 Exam Guide

MID5101 for assistant midwives: the 45 percent pass mark, the supervised scope the paper is built around, how it differs from MID5104, and the route to upgrading later.

The assistant midwife paper is the one candidates most often sit by accident. They apply as midwives, the regulator reads the qualification, and the code that comes back is MID5101 rather than MID5104. It is a genuine title with genuine work behind it, but the paper is built around a supervised scope, and the questions are written to find out whether you know where that scope ends.

What the assistant midwife title covers

An assistant midwife supports care rather than leads it. Observation, comfort measures, preparation, assisting at delivery, postnatal support and feeding help sit inside the scope. Independent decisions about the progress of labour do not. In most Gulf authorities the title exists to staff a maternity unit safely alongside registered midwives, so the exam rewards accurate observation and prompt reporting rather than clinical judgement calls.

The paper in numbers

  • Exam code: MID5101
  • Questions: 150 multiple choice
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Pass score: 45 percent
  • Delivery: Prometric or Pearson VUE test centre

Forty five percent is 68 correct answers out of 150. It is the lowest bar in the midwifery family, and it is set there because the paper is testing safety rather than depth.

What the paper actually asks

The coverage list looks the same as the registered midwife blueprint, running from antenatal through intrapartum, postpartum, newborn and gynaecological care with pharmacology, ethics and counselling alongside. The level is what differs. Expect questions such as these:

  • Which observation to take, how often, and which reading has to be reported immediately
  • Preparing the room, the trolley and the newborn area, and what sterile technique failure looks like
  • Positioning, hygiene, perineal care and early mobilisation after delivery
  • Newborn warmth, weighing, cord care, and the signs that must be escalated rather than watched
  • Breastfeeding support, attachment problems and when to call the midwife
  • Documentation, consent and confidentiality, which carry more marks than most candidates expect

Where candidates lose marks

Almost every failed attempt has the same shape. The candidate answers as a registered midwife, choosing the clinically correct intervention in a question that was asking who performs it. If an option describes reporting to the midwife or the obstetric team, read it seriously rather than dismissing it as the passive choice. The second common loss is medication. An assistant midwife does not administer uterotonics independently, and questions about them are testing that boundary, not your pharmacology.

Moving from assistant midwife to registered midwife

The upgrade follows the qualification, never the exam. Passing MID5101 does not convert into MID5104. You complete the recognised midwifery programme the authority accepts, have it verified at source, and then apply again for the registered title with a fresh exam. Candidates who plan this from the start keep every clinical hour documented on letterhead, because that record is what supports the later application. The registered midwife paper is the target to prepare for once the qualification is in hand.

Which regulator licenses you

The assistant title is not written identically everywhere, and a few authorities restrict it more tightly than others. DHA, DOH and MOHAP cover the UAE, with SCFHS in Saudi Arabia, QCHP in Qatar, NHRA in Bahrain and OMSB in Oman. Check the scope wording before you accept a job offer, because an employer describing the role as midwifery does not change what your licence permits.

Documents that decide the timeline

Assistant midwife files stall on two documents. The first is the qualification, where a certificate in midwifery has to be distinguishable from a nursing certificate with maternity rotations. The second is the experience letter, which must name the supervised scope you worked in. Vague letters push files towards a lower title or a rejection. The DataFlow verification guide lists what an assessor is checking.

Frequently asked questions

Is the assistant midwife exam easier than the registered midwife exam?

The pass mark is lower and the clinical depth is narrower, so the content is easier. The scope questions are not, and they are where prepared candidates still fail.

Can I apply for the registered midwife code instead?

You can apply, but the authority assigns the code from the qualification on file. Applying for a title the paperwork does not support usually returns the same assistant code after a delay and a fee.

Does assistant midwife experience count towards the registered title later?

It supports the application, it does not replace the qualification. Keep letters that state your dates, your unit and the supervision you worked under.

Next steps

Confirm which code your file supports with an eligibility check, then work through the MID5101 practice bank, which holds 2,343 explained questions across 24 chapters at the 45 percent standard. Join the talent pool for maternity vacancies, read the nursing and midwifery exam guide for how the four papers relate, and check every code in the exam codes directory.
