ECG Technologist License in the GCC 2026: ECG5613 Exam Guide

ECG5613 for cardiac technologists: the 55 percent pass mark, the stress testing and device questions that decide it, how the scope differs from the technician code, and the licensing route.

ECG5613 is the paper for the cardiac professional who does more than record. The technologist scope covers exercise testing, ambulatory monitoring and device follow up, and the pass mark reflects it at 55 percent. The subject headings look identical to the technician paper. The depth is not.

What the technologist title adds

A technician records and escalates. A technologist runs procedures with a patient under physiological stress, prepares and reviews long recordings, supports device clinics, and in many units supervises technicians and signs off on recording quality. The technician code, ECG5612, sits below it at a 50 percent pass mark. Regulators issue the title from your qualification and your documented procedure experience, not from what your current employer calls the post.

The paper in numbers

  • Exam code: ECG5613
  • Questions: 150 multiple choice
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Pass score: 55 percent
  • Delivery: Prometric or Pearson VUE test centre

Fifty five percent is 83 correct answers out of 150. The extra eight answers over the technician bar come out of the sections technologists tend to learn on the job and never revise.

What the paper actually asks

Coverage runs across cardiac anatomy, electrophysiology, the technical aspects of the 12 lead recording, ischaemic heart disease, valvular heart disease, tachyarrhythmias and bradyarrhythmias, pharmacotherapy, pacemakers and defibrillators, and basic life support. At technologist level the questions connect them.

  • Exercise testing: preparation, contraindications, the reasons to stop a test early, and what the trace and the blood pressure response mean together
  • Ambulatory and event monitoring: hook up, patient diaries, artefact over long recordings, and how findings are summarised for the physician
  • Arrhythmia recognition in depth, including the tachycardias that must be separated from one another before anyone treats them
  • Pacemakers and implanted defibrillators: what the spikes tell you, failure to capture and failure to sense, and safety around a patient with a device
  • Ischaemic and valvular disease, where a trace is read against the clinical picture rather than in isolation
  • Pharmacotherapy, including drugs that blunt the heart rate response and therefore change how a stress test is judged

Where candidates lose marks

Stress testing is where most attempts are decided. Questions about absolute contraindications and about when to terminate a test are unforgiving, because the correct answer is the cautious one and experienced staff answer from local practice instead. Device questions come second: technologists who work in units without a device clinic have no exposure to failure to capture and failure to sense, and those items appear anyway. The third loss is the assumption that recording technique questions are beneath this paper. They are not, and they are free marks.

Which regulator licenses you

Every authority registers this scope, though under different names. DHA, DOH and MOHAP cover the UAE, with SCFHS in Saudi Arabia, QCHP in Qatar, NHRA in Bahrain and OMSB in Oman. Several register technologists under cardiovascular technology rather than ECG, and the scope granted decides whether you may run a stress test with a physician nearby or only under direct supervision.

Documents that decide the timeline

The technologist title is won or lost on evidence of procedures. A degree or advanced diploma in cardiovascular or cardiac technology, verifiable at source, is the base. On top of it, experience letters should state which procedures you performed and roughly how many, because an assessor deciding between ECG5612 and ECG5613 is looking for stress tests, ambulatory studies and device work in writing. Files that describe duties in general terms are usually assigned the lower title. The DataFlow verification guide covers the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Should I sit the technologist paper if my file might only support technician?

You do not get the choice. The authority issues the code, and the exam you book has to match it. Confirm the code first, then prepare for that paper.

Is echocardiography part of this exam?

No. Echocardiography is a separate scope with its own licensing route. This paper stays with electrocardiography, stress testing, monitoring and devices.

Does a technologist licence allow independent reporting?

No Gulf authority grants diagnostic reporting to this title. You produce and quality check the study, and the physician reports it.

Next steps

Confirm your code with an eligibility check, prepare with the ECG5613 practice bank while verification runs, and join the talent pool so cardiac vacancies are matched to your file. Pass marks by authority are in the pass score guide, and every code is listed in the exam codes directory.
