ECG Technician License in the GCC 2026: ECG5612 Exam Guide

ECG5612 for cardiac technicians: the 50 percent pass mark, the lead placement and artefact questions that decide it, how it differs from the technologist code, and the licensing route.

An ECG technician is judged on two things: whether the trace is clean, and whether the abnormal trace reaches a doctor fast enough. ECG5612 is written around exactly that. It asks for 50 percent, and the questions that decide it are technical rather than diagnostic.

Technician and technologist are separate codes

ECG5612 is the technician title, centred on recording, quality and escalation. ECG5613 is the technologist title, a wider scope that adds diagnostic procedures and carries a higher pass mark. The regulator assigns the code from your qualification and your documented experience, so check which one your file supports before booking anything, because the two papers are not interchangeable.

The paper in numbers

  • Exam code: ECG5612
  • Questions: 150 multiple choice
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Pass score: 50 percent
  • Delivery: Prometric or Pearson VUE test centre

Fifty percent is 75 correct answers out of 150. Most of those marks are available in areas you touch every shift, which is why unprepared candidates are surprised when they fail.

What the paper actually asks

Coverage runs across cardiac anatomy, cardiac electrophysiology, the technical aspects of the 12 lead recording, ischaemic heart disease, valvular heart disease, tachyarrhythmias and bradyarrhythmias, pharmacotherapy, pacemakers and defibrillators, and basic life support.

  • Electrode placement, the standard positions and what a misplaced lead does to the trace
  • Artefact: movement, tremor, electrical interference, loose contact, and how each one looks
  • Calibration, paper speed and gain, and what changing them does to the appearance of the recording
  • Rate and rhythm basics, and recognising the patterns that cannot wait for a report
  • Electrophysiology at the level of what each part of the complex represents
  • Basic life support sequence, defibrillator safety, and pacing spikes on a trace

Where candidates lose marks

The first pattern is treating lead placement as common sense. The exam asks it precisely, including limb lead reversal and the effect of a chest lead placed one space too high, and experienced technicians who have never been questioned on it get these wrong. The second is escalation. Several questions describe a trace and ask what you do, and the answer is to stay with the patient and alert clinical staff immediately rather than to repeat the recording or file it. The third is pharmacotherapy, a named coverage area that technicians often skip on the grounds that they do not prescribe. It appears anyway, at the level of which drugs alter rate, rhythm and conduction.

Which regulator licenses you

The cardiac technician title exists across all seven authorities, but the naming varies and so does the qualification behind it. DHA, DOH and MOHAP license in the UAE, with SCFHS in Saudi Arabia, QCHP in Qatar, NHRA in Bahrain and OMSB in Oman. Some authorities register cardiac technicians under a wider cardiovascular technology heading, which changes the code that is issued to you.

Documents that decide the timeline

Cardiac technician files are held up by unclear qualifications. Short in house training certificates from an employer rarely satisfy a regulator on their own, and a general science diploma with cardiac experience is assessed on the transcript rather than the job title. Experience letters should name the procedures you performed and the volume, because that is what separates a technician application from a technologist one. The DataFlow verification guide covers what else is checked.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to interpret ECGs to pass this exam?

You need to recognise, not to report. The paper expects you to identify normal from abnormal and to know which abnormalities are emergencies. Formal interpretation stays with the physician.

Can a nurse with ECG experience sit this paper?

Licensing follows the qualification. A nurse is licensed as a nurse, and ECG duties inside a nursing role do not produce a technician title, though they help an employer place you.

How is this different from the technologist exam?

Same subject areas, different depth and a higher pass mark for the technologist, which is written for a scope that includes stress testing, ambulatory monitoring and device checks.
