DHA License for UK Doctors: GMC to Dubai Practice

UK trained doctors have the easiest tier question in GCC licensing and the hardest paperwork. Both facts come from the same place, which is British postgraduate training.

DHA names MRCP and FRCS directly among the specialty routes it recognises, alongside the Arab Board and the American Boards. For most applicants from most countries the difficult question is whether their postgraduate qualification will be accepted at all. For a UK doctor holding MRCP or FRCS with documented specialty practice, that question is usually settled before it is asked.

The difficulty sits elsewhere. DHA wants experience letters covering every year since qualification, each stating the role, the exact dates, whether the post was full time, and an HR contact. British training is rotational. A registrar three years into a programme may have worked at six trusts, each with its own medical staffing office, and none of them holds the whole picture. The candidate whose qualification sails through is often the one whose employment history takes longest to assemble.

Note what the specialist row counts. It is not three years since you started training. It is three years in the specialty after the board qualification was awarded. The exam date matters, and a candidate who assumes their whole registrar period counts can end up classified a tier below where they expected.

Assembling a rotational history

Start from your own records rather than from memory. Your GMC registration history, your training programme records, and your payslips together give you the dates. Then request letters from each employer, and expect a range of quality.

Three things make a British letter usable. It should state exact dates in day, month and year rather than academic years or rotation numbers, since a letter describing ST3 August intake means nothing to a reviewer in Dubai. It should describe the clinical role in plain terms rather than in grade codes. And it should carry a named contact who can confirm it, not a generic HR inbox that nobody monitors.

Where a trust will only issue a standard employment confirmation with dates and job title, take it and supplement it. A certificate of service from the deanery covering a training programme is often more useful than six separate trust letters, because it covers the whole period continuously.

Good standing from the GMC

Your certificate of good standing comes from the GMC and must be valid within six months at the point of submission. The clock runs from the date printed on the certificate. Order it once your other documents are close to ready, not at the beginning, because an expired certificate has to be requested and paid for again. Dataflow when your records are in the UK

Primary source verification takes four to eight weeks and is the longest single step. UK institutions are generally responsive, which works in your favour, but the report still has to reach every issuing body: your medical school, the GMC, and each employer named in your experience letters. The more employers, the more parallel verification threads, and the more chances for one slow response to hold the whole report.

The exam

Once Dataflow clears and DHA issues your eligibility ID, you book Prometric. You can sit it in the UK, in Dubai, or at any international centre. The cut off is typically 60 percent for the title you applied under and the result appears on screen immediately.

UK doctors often underprepare here, reasoning that a paper set below MRCP level needs no work. The risk is not difficulty, it is scope. Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Saudi Arabia

A DHA licence covers Dubai only. Abu Dhabi licenses through DOH, which adds a consultant interview panel that the other UAE authorities do not run. The federal authority MOHAP covers the remaining emirates. Saudi Arabia classifies through SCFHS, and its specialist tier is set at four years post-qualification with two in the specialty, which is a different calculation from Dubai.

Frequently asked questions

Does MRCP on its own make me a specialist for DHA?

No. The qualification satisfies the board requirement, but the tier also needs documented specialty practice after it was awarded. Three years is the stated requirement. What decides your classification is whether your letters prove those years in the format the authority accepts.

My rotations were three or four months each. Do I need a letter for every one?

You need the period covered, not necessarily a separate letter per placement. A continuous certificate of service covering a whole training programme is usually stronger than a stack of short letters, and it gives Dataflow one body to verify instead of many.

Can I keep my GMC registration while working in the UAE?

Registration with your home regulator and a GCC licence are separate things and holding both is common. What matters for the application is that your home registration is current and in good standing at the point of submission, since a lapsed registration cannot produce a valid good standing certificate.
