SCFHS License for Indian Nurses: The Experience Letter Rule

A Saudi file does not stall on the exam. It stalls on a gap of four months in 2019 that nobody can now account for.

SCFHS asks for continuous experience letters covering every month since qualification. Not every year, every month. For Indian nurses this is the single hardest requirement in the whole process, because the typical Indian nursing career is not one long post. It is a year at a district hospital, a break, eighteen months at a corporate chain, a move to another city, then a private nursing home. Each of those employers issues letters differently, and some of them no longer exist.

Why the month rule exists, and what it actually means

The Saudi Commission for Health Specialties classifies every professional before it licenses them, and classification depends on how much post-qualification practice you can prove. A gap that cannot be explained is treated as a gap in practice, which can push you into a lower classification than your career deserves.

The rule is not that you must have worked every month. It is that every month must be accounted for. A documented career break, further study, or maternity leave is a normal part of a file. An unexplained silence is not.

What each letter has to carry

Reviewers are not looking for a testimonial. They are looking for four things they can check: what your role was, when it started and ended to the day, whether you were full time, and who at the hospital can confirm it. A letter that praises your dedication but omits the dates proves nothing. Put it on hospital letterhead, have it signed, and name the department, because ward level detail is what makes a letter credible.

Two practical points for Indian nurses in particular. Ask for the letter while you still work there, or within weeks of leaving, because HR departments become slower and less helpful with every year that passes. And ask for it in English, since a letter that later needs translation adds a step to a process that already has too many.

The exam is the part you can control

Dataflow verification is the longest step and most of it is outside your hands, since it depends on how quickly your university and your former employers reply. The exam is the opposite. It is entirely within your control and it is the one place where preparation changes the outcome.

The registered nurse paper runs three hours and the pass mark sits at 50 percent. The assistant nurse paper is set at 45 percent against a different blueprint, so preparing from the wrong material is a real risk when both are described loosely as the nursing exam. Saudi Arabia or the UAE first?

Both are open to Indian nurses and the choice usually comes down to the offer rather than the process. What is worth knowing is that most of a Dataflow report can be reused when you later move to another authority, so a first licence is rarely wasted effort. Frequently asked questions

I have a four month gap between two jobs. Will SCFHS reject my file?

A gap is not automatically a problem. What causes trouble is a gap with nothing attached to it. If the time was spent studying, on maternity leave, or on a documented career break, say so and provide whatever evidence exists. The files that stall are the ones where the months are simply missing and nobody can explain them years later.

My first hospital has closed. How do I prove I worked there?

Start with whatever primary evidence you still hold, such as appointment letters, relieving letters, salary slips and provident fund records. Where the institution has been absorbed by another group, the successor organisation sometimes holds the records. This is the situation where getting the file assessed before you submit matters most, because the alternative is discovering the problem after you have paid.

Can I sit the exam in India?

Yes. Once your file reaches the stage where the exam is released to you, the paper can be booked at a Prometric centre in India or anywhere Prometric operates. You do not need to travel to Saudi Arabia to sit it, and you do not need a job offer to begin the process.
