Radiography Technician License in the GCC 2026: RAD5622 Guide

Most radiography technicians spend their working week on one or two machines. The RAD5622 blueprint covers seven, and it does not care which ones are in your department.

X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, angiography and fluoroscopy are all listed. A technician who has run a general X-ray room for six years can be genuinely excellent at the job and still meet twenty questions about modalities they have never operated. That is the shape of this exam, and preparing for it means accepting that from the first day of revision.

Technician and radiographer are separate codes

RAD5622 is the radiography technician paper at forty five percent. RAD5152 is the radiographer paper at fifty five percent. They are different licences for different titles, and the authority decides which one you may sit from your qualification rather than your job title or your years of service.

This matters more in radiology than in most professions, because department job titles vary so widely between countries. A person called a radiographer at home may hold a technician level diploma, and the reverse happens too. Settle it with the eligibility check before you pay an exam fee, not after a file is refused.

Sixty eight correct answers out of 150 clears it. Across eleven areas that is about six per area, so a candidate who is strong in two modalities and absent in five has already made the pass mathematically hard.

What the paper actually asks

The eleven areas fall into three groups, and only one of them can be revised from experience alone.

Radiation protection, the area that decides the paper. It is listed first for a reason. Dose limits, shielding, the reasoning behind justification and optimisation, protection of staff and of the patient, and the specific care owed to paediatric and pregnant patients. These questions appear throughout the paper rather than in one block, and they are the ones an examiner uses to separate a safe practitioner from a competent button presser.

The modalities. X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, angiography and fluoroscopy. You are not asked to operate them. You are asked what each is for, what it does to the patient, what its contraindications are and what makes an image fail. MRI safety questions are the most reliable source of marks here and the least revised, because a technician who never enters an MRI suite assumes the topic belongs to someone else.

Anatomy, safety and conduct. General anatomy, patient safety, and professionalism and ethics. Anatomy on this paper is positioning anatomy rather than dissection detail, which is a friendlier subject than most candidates expect. Professionalism and ethics is small, finite and consistent, so it is close to free marks.

Where candidates lose marks

• Revising the machine they use. Depth in general radiography does nothing for the CT, MRI and nuclear medicine questions, and those are a real share of the paper.
• Treating radiation protection as common sense. It has numbers, principles and named limits, and the questions test those rather than instinct.
• Skipping MRI safety. Screening, ferromagnetic hazards and the zones exist as examinable material whether or not your hospital has a scanner.
• Assuming 45 percent is a formality. It is the lowest bar in the radiology family and it still needs sixty eight right answers under a three hour clock.
• Practising untimed. Seventy two seconds a question, with image based stems that take longer to read than a text question does.

The paper is the same everywhere. The licence, the fees and the document rules belong to the authority where you will work.

Do I need experience on CT and MRI to pass RAD5622?

No. The questions test understanding rather than operation, so principles, safety and contraindications are what you are being asked about. You can revise those without ever having run the scanner.

Can I sit the radiographer paper instead if I want a better title?

Only if your qualification supports the radiographer title. The authority maps the code to your diploma or degree, so the route to RAD5152 runs through further qualification rather than a different exam booking.

Is radiation protection really the most important area?

It is listed first on the blueprint and its content appears inside questions from the other areas as well, which makes it the highest return revision on the paper even though it is one entry on a list of eleven.
