Pharmacist License in the GCC 2026: PHO5481 Exam Guide
PHO5481 for pharmacists: the 60 percent pass mark, what the paper tests beyond drug names, the difference from clinical pharmacy and pharmacy technician codes, and the licensing route.
Pharmacy has one of the higher pass marks in the Gulf licensing system. PHO5481 asks for 60 percent, which is ninety correct answers out of a hundred and fifty, and the paper is broader than most candidates expect. It is not a drug names test. It is a practice test that happens to use drug names.
Which pharmacy code is yours
Three codes sit close together and they are not interchangeable. PHO5481 is the general pharmacist licence. Clinical pharmacy is a separate code for practitioners working in a clinical role alongside prescribers, usually requiring a higher qualification. Pharmacy technician is a supervised scope with its own paper. Regulators assign the title from your qualification and experience, so check yours before you pay.
The paper in numbers
- Exam code: PHO5481
- Questions: 150 multiple choice
- Duration: 3 hours
- Pass score: 60 percent
- Delivery: Prometric or Pearson VUE test centre
Sixty percent changes how you should revise. On a fifty percent paper you can afford to abandon a weak area. Here you cannot, because losing a whole topic takes a third of your margin with it.
What the paper actually asks
Expect pharmacology and therapeutics as the backbone, with pharmaceutical calculations, dispensing practice, patient counselling, interactions and contraindications, storage and stability, and the legal and ethical side of pharmacy practice. Calculations deserve separate attention because they are the fastest marks in the paper and the ones most often lost to speed rather than to knowledge. Dose per weight, dilutions, infusion rates and unit conversion should be automatic before exam day.
Counselling questions are the other differentiator. They are written from the patient side, not the drug side. The correct answer is usually the one that is safe, clear and within the pharmacist scope, rather than the one that shows the most knowledge.

Which regulator licenses you
Pharmacists follow the same rule as every other profession. The authority is the one that governs your employer: DHA in Dubai, DOH in Abu Dhabi, MOHAP in the Northern Emirates, SCFHS in Saudi Arabia, QCHP in Qatar, NHRA in Bahrain and OMSB in Oman. Community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy and industry roles can carry different requirements within the same authority, so read the page for yours.
Documents that decide the timeline
Pharmacy files are held up most often by internship and registration evidence. Your home country pharmacy council registration has to be verifiable at source, and your internship or house job certificate needs dates and a contactable issuer. The DataFlow verification guide lists the rest, including the Good Standing timing mistake that costs candidates a second fee.
Frequently asked questions
Is the pharmacist exam harder than other allied health papers?
The content is not harder in itself, but the 60 percent pass mark leaves less room for weak areas, and the calculation questions punish rushing. Most failures come from time management rather than from unfamiliar material.
Can a pharmacy technician upgrade to pharmacist later?
Not through experience alone. The pharmacist title requires the pharmacy qualification the regulator recognises, so the route runs through education rather than through years served.
Do I need Arabic to practise as a pharmacist in the Gulf?
It is not a licensing requirement, and the exam is in English. In community pharmacy it is a practical advantage with patients, and some employers weigh it in hiring, which is different from licensing.
