Dental Assistant License in the GCC 2026: DAS5111 Exam Guide

The DAS5111 Prometric paper explained for dental assistants, with the 60 percent pass mark, the coverage areas, the document trap that stalls files, and the route to a Gulf licence.

Dental assistants are among the most in demand allied health roles in the Gulf, and also among the most misfiled. Clinics recruit constantly, yet a large share of applications stall before the exam is ever booked, almost always for reasons that have nothing to do with clinical ability. This guide covers the DAS5111 paper, the pass mark, and the parts of the process where dental assistants specifically lose time.

Who sits DAS5111

DAS5111 is the licensing paper for the Dental Assistant professional title. The DHA lists the code, and the same assessment is used across the region. It is worth being precise about the title, because dentistry has several closely related roles with separate codes and separate scopes. A dental hygienist performs non surgical periodontal therapy and sits a different paper. A dental lab technician does not treat patients at all. Applying under a title that does not match your qualification is the single most common reason a dentistry file is returned.

The paper in numbers

  • Exam code: DAS5111
  • Questions: 150 multiple choice
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Pass score: 60 percent
  • Delivery: Prometric or Pearson VUE test centre

Note the pass mark. Sixty percent is higher than several other allied health papers, which means ninety correct answers out of a hundred and fifty. There is less room to write off a whole topic than candidates assume.

What the exam covers

  • Dental anatomy. Tooth numbering, morphology and surrounding structures. Notation systems appear often, so be fluent in the one the question uses rather than only the one you trained on.
  • Dental assisting practice. Chairside procedure, four handed dentistry, instrument transfer and patient positioning.
  • Dental health and preventive dentistry. Oral hygiene instruction, fluoride, sealants and patient education.
  • Dental materials. Mixing, setting times, storage and handling. Materials questions reward exactness, so learn the numbers rather than the impressions.
  • Dental radiography. Technique, positioning errors and radiation safety. Expect to be shown a described error and asked what caused it.
  • Infection control. Sterilisation cycles, spore testing, surface barriers and waste handling. This section is where the regulator is least forgiving, and it is heavily weighted for a reason.

The DAS5111 practice bank is arranged by these same areas, and every question carries an explanation so a wrong answer teaches something.

Which authority you apply to

The regulator follows the employer. Dubai clinics license through the DHA, Abu Dhabi through the DOH, the Northern Emirates through MOHAP. Outside the UAE the routes are SCFHS in Saudi Arabia, QCHP in Qatar, NHRA in Bahrain and OMSB in Oman.

The document that stalls dental assistant files

Diploma level qualifications are verified exactly as strictly as degrees, and many dental assisting programmes are run by institutes rather than universities. When the issuing institute has merged, rebranded or closed, verification stops until somebody tells the verifier where the records now live. Send that information at the start, with the closure or merger evidence, instead of waiting for the query.

The second trap is the experience letter. A clinic owner signing on a prescription pad is not a verifiable employment certificate. It needs the clinic letterhead, exact dates, your title, and a phone number and email that somebody answers. The DataFlow guide sets out the rest of the checklist.

How long it takes

Verification runs thirty to sixty days, eligibility review one to three weeks after that, then booking depends on test centre availability. Three months from decision to exam day is a realistic plan. Candidates who beat it are the ones who fixed the file before submitting it and studied while it was being checked.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work as a dental assistant while my licence is in process?

No. Every Gulf regulator requires the licence before clinical work begins, and clinics that ignore that rule put their own facility licence at risk. Any offer that suggests otherwise is worth treating with caution.

Is a dental assistant certificate from a private institute accepted?

It depends on the programme length, the awarding body and whether the institute can be verified at source. Run an eligibility check before you pay any fee, because this is decided by the regulator, not by the institute that issued the certificate.

What is the difference between DAS5111 and the dental hygienist paper?

Scope. The hygienist paper covers non surgical periodontal therapy and independent preventive treatment, which sit outside the assistant scope. If you hold a hygiene qualification, see the dental hygienist exam instead.
