Assistant Nurse License in the GCC 2026: ARN5061 Exam Guide

ARN5061 for assistant nurses: the 45 percent pass mark, the scope questions that decide the paper, how it differs from the registered nurse exam, and the licensing route.

The assistant nurse paper carries the lowest pass mark in the Gulf nursing family at 45 percent, and that number misleads people. Candidates rarely fail ARN5061 because the clinical content is hard. They fail it because the paper is built around scope, and scope questions punish anyone who answers the way a registered nurse would.

Which nursing code is yours

Four codes sit close together and regulators do not let candidates choose between them. The title comes from your qualification and your documented experience. ARN5061 is the supervised assistant nurse scope. RNT0312 is the registered nurse paper. Midwifery is a separate profession with its own codes, MID5104 for registered midwives and MID5101 for assistant midwives. Sitting the wrong paper does not upgrade your title, it only costs you the fee. The GCC nursing exam guide sets out which paper each authority assigns.

The paper in numbers

  • Exam code: ARN5061
  • Questions: 150 multiple choice
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Pass score: 45 percent
  • Delivery: Prometric or Pearson VUE test centre

Forty five percent is 68 correct answers out of 150. That leaves room for weak areas, which is why the paper is often underestimated, and it is also why a single careless block of scope questions is enough to end an attempt.

What the paper actually asks

The blueprint runs across four coverage areas: fundamentals, adult nursing, maternal and child nursing, and unit management and leadership. In practice most items sit in fundamentals, and they are written as first action questions.

  • Vital signs, recognising the abnormal reading and knowing who to tell before you act
  • Infection control, including the order of putting on and removing protective equipment and how isolation precautions change by organism
  • Pressure area care, positioning, safe transfer and fall prevention
  • Feeding, elimination, catheter and stoma care, and accurate intake and output charting
  • Specimen collection, labelling and transport
  • Documentation, handover and incident reporting under the unit management heading

Maternal and child items stay at assistant level, covering observation, comfort measures, weighing and feeding support rather than clinical decision making.

Where candidates lose marks

Three patterns account for most failed attempts. The first is answering above scope. When a question describes a deteriorating patient, the correct assistant nurse answer is usually to stay with the patient and report to the registered nurse, not to start an intervention. The second is medication. An assistant nurse role is limited in what may be given and under what supervision, and calculation questions in this paper are testing whether you know the limit, not whether you can do the arithmetic. The third is misreading time order questions, where several options are all correct actions and only one is correct first.

Which regulator licenses you

The same paper is used across the region, but the title and the diploma requirement behind it are set locally. In the UAE that is DHA in Dubai, DOH in Abu Dhabi and MOHAP for the northern emirates. Elsewhere it is SCFHS in Saudi Arabia, QCHP in Qatar, NHRA in Bahrain and OMSB in Oman. Some authorities expect a nursing diploma of a set length before they will register an assistant title at all, so confirm the requirement before you book anything.

Documents that decide the timeline

Assistant nurse files stall on experience letters more than on anything else. The letter has to state the scope you worked in and the supervision you worked under, on hospital letterhead, with dates that match your registration. Your nursing council registration must be verifiable at source. The DataFlow verification guide covers the rest, including the Good Standing timing that sends candidates back for a second fee.

Frequently asked questions

Can an assistant nurse upgrade to registered nurse later?

Yes, but the upgrade follows the qualification, not the exam. Passing ARN5061 does not convert into a registered nurse licence. You complete the recognised nursing degree or diploma the authority requires, then sit RNT0312 as a new application.

Is the assistant nurse paper easier than the registered nurse exam?

The pass mark is lower and the clinical depth is narrower, so on content it is the easier paper. The failure rate is not as low as that suggests, because the scope questions are unfamiliar to candidates who trained and worked in systems where assistant duties are drawn more widely.

Does caregiver or home care experience count towards licensing?

Only where it was performed under a recognised nursing scope and can be evidenced by a licensed facility. Agency and private household work is usually rejected at the verification stage rather than at the exam stage.
